Welcome to PetroPhase 2016

Welcome to PetroPhase 2016 Dear conference participants, On behalf of the Technical and Organizing Com-mittees, we welcome you to the 17th International Conference on Petroleum Phase Behavior & Fouling – PetroPhase 2016.

PetroPhase is an international conference aimed at researchers in industry and academia dedicated to the study of the properties and chemistry of petro-leum fluids and their effect on producing, process-ing, and refining in the upstream, mid-stream, and downstream industries. The conference started in 1999 as “The International Conference on Petroleum Phase Behavior & Fouling” and has since evolved into an annual event alternating venues among countries all around the world. PetroPhase has been fortunate to have enjoyed financial and organizational support from many academic and industrial institutions through the years.

Despite its growth over the years, PetroPhase has always had the feel of an intimate conference where all participants are present in all the activities. This means that we have continued the tradition of eschewing parallel oral sessions, only selecting a limited number of talks, and having the bulk of contributions in a “gala” poster session. In this way quality one-on-one interactions are ensured. We look forward to experiencing over 150 contributions over the course of four days. Please also remember that all contributors are invited to submit a full manuscript to Energy and Fuels with deadline September 15th 2016.

The conference is traditionally organized each year by different volunteer organizations, and the Technical University of Denmark is proud to contin-ue the tradition by organizing this year’s conference at the Marienlyst Beach Hotel. In addition to the technical presentations (poster or oral) the confer-ence receptions and social events allow attendees am-ple opportunity to interact with colleagues working in or in the support of the petroleum industry. The conference dinner on Wednesday evening will be held in the ballroom at Kronborg Castle (Shakespeare’s imagined setting for Hamlet), a short walk along the beach from the hotel. Organizing a conference is a large, sometimes chaotic, collaborative endeavor, perhaps bringing to mind the words of Polonius in Hamlet: “Though this be mad-ness, yet there is method in’t.” We therefore thank the technical and organizing committees for their work, without which a conference of this size would not be possible. We would like to thank our sponsors: govern-ment, private and industrial – especially the Danish national and private foundations which are an under-valued and tremendously enabling asset to the country. Finally, we wish to thank the presenters and attendees of the conference – you are the reason that PetroPhase exists and thrives, even in “difficult” times.

So, enjoy all aspects of the conference and we hope your stay will be a memorable one.

The conference started in 1999 as “The International Conference on Petroleum Phase Behavior & Fouling” and has since evolved into an annual event alternating venues among countries all around the world. Petrophase has been fortunate to have enjoyed financial and organizational support from many academic and industrial institutions through the years.

The conference is traditionally organized each year by different volunteer organizations, and the Technical University of Denmark is proud to continue the tradition by organizing the 2016 PetroPhase Conference, which will be held at Marienlyst Beach Hotel June 19 – 23, 2016.

The conference will have oral and poster presentations from leading experts in academia and industry. In addition, the conference receptions and social events allow attendees ample opportunities to interact with colleagues working in or in the support of the petroleum industry.

Major topics for the conference include:

  • Petroleum Chemistry – Analysis and characterization of petroleum chemical species including asphaltenes, resins, waxes, naphthenates.

  • Petroleum Properties and Phase Behavior – Phase equilibria, physical properties, physical & chemical associations, fluid interactions.
  • Emulsions – From fundamental studies to field experience in the understanding and handling of petroleum oil-in-water and/or water-in-oil emulsions issues in production and processing operations for petroleum production and refining.

  • Flow Assurance – From fundamental studies to field experience in the understanding and management of flow assurance issues related to wax, asphaltenes, gas hydrates and other flow assurance issues.
  • Upgrading & Fouling in Refining – From fundamental studies to field experience in the understanding and management of fouling from asphaltenes, coking, and long chain polymerization (gum deposits) in heat exchangers, furnaces, and other refinery units as well as upgrading of heavy oil.

  • Shale Oil & Gas and Enhanced Oil Recovery – Studies related to shale oil, shale gas and enhanced oil recovery
